The main goal of this design was to set the show inside of an old church. All elements of the set had to feel like they belonged in the church, while also serving the needs of the script and the performance space.
Due to all of the magic elements in the show, I had to design mechanisms to magically close the window shutters, flip a chair, levitate a cross, and dump the infamous blood bucket.
The aesthetic of the show was also influenced by the idea that the story takes place in one of the character’s memory, so there are inconsistencies around the space and the edges fade away.

The stained glass windows mimic famous religious paintings but with the characters of Carrie inserted into them.
The prayer room/locker unit required special attention. The front featured lockers which were used as an entrance and exit for the ensemble, so two of the lockers have secret doors to the other side. The back side of the locker unit features the prayer room. When Carrie is thrown in, I wanted to have her in an enclosed space so the audience can't see her. But in another scene, we see Carrie practicing her levitation powers on a cross, so the front walls of the prayer room open up like a book so the audience can go into the space with Carrie. One of the walls is thin enough so that the cross can be moved via a magnet on the other side of the wall.
I spent a lot of time on this piece, drafting the entire thing in 3D early on in the process to ensure that it would work and so everyone had an idea of how it could move.
Here are some of my draftings, including a full 3D model of the set. This really helped me communicate with the director and design team about my ideas and catch potential issues before anything was built.
