Since this show begins pretty tame, I wanted the office scenes in 9 To 5 to look like a standard 80s office. But the musical numbers are much less realistic, often taking place in the imaginations of characters. I emphasized this reality shift by adding color and lighting effects throughout each musical number.
I wanted to give each of the five main characters their own color, leading to all of the fixtures along the sides of the light plot, all washing the stage in different colors. The 4th electric was a special that was flown into audience view for some musical numbers, and I designed chases and other effects along the length. I also had a 3rd set of top light with R99 (chocolate) gels for the noir style song, "Dance of Death." All of these elements led to 148 fixtures in total, a new record for the space.
